Connect GitHub

Connect GitHub to see pull requests and commits in Engineering insights: throughput, cost per merged pull request, and how code links back to tickets. Flowstate only reads from GitHub.

You need access to integrations, and Engineering insights switched on for your organisation. Ask your Flowstate admin.

Looking for Copilot costs? That’s a separate connection: Connect GitHub Copilot.

Before you start

  • In GitHub: an owner of your GitHub organisation, to install the Flowstate GitHub App.
  • In Flowstate: your people added with their work email addresses. See People and teams.

Connect GitHub

  1. Go to Settings → Integrations, select Browse catalog and open GitHub.
  2. Select Connect. GitHub opens.
  3. Choose your organisation, then All repositories or the repositories you want.
  4. Approve the installation. You come back to the Configure GitHub page.
  5. On the Map contributors step, select Open the mapping hub. User attribution opens. Match each GitHub account to a person. See Match people and teams from your tools.
  6. On the Effort blend step, decide whether GitHub counts towards effort (see below).

Choose All repositories so everyone’s work is seen.

Decide whether GitHub counts towards effort

Agree this with your finance lead first. It changes effort, and so CapEx and R&D figures.

SwitchWhat it does
Blend GitHub into effortCounts GitHub activity towards effort alongside your project tool. When it’s off, GitHub activity is brought in but doesn’t change effort.
Commit-timestamp attributionUses when people commit to shape their daily effort, including work with no ticket. Off unless you turn it on.

Check it’s working

On the Verify health step:

  • The status is Healthy.
  • Backfill shows Completed with a date, meaning your history has come in.
  • Map contributors says “Every active contributor is mapped”.

You can also check GitHub on Settings → Integrations → Sync Health. See The GitHub tab.

What syncs

  • Pull requests, commits and review activity from the repositories you include.
  • Contributor accounts, so they can be matched to your people.
  • New activity arrives as it happens. Your history comes in once, when you connect.

Disconnect

Select Disconnect on the Connection step. Flowstate stops receiving GitHub activity. History already brought in is kept.

If something’s not right

Nothing is showing yet. Your history is still coming in. Verify health says “A backfill is currently running” until it’s done.

Pull requests are missing. The repository isn’t included in the installation. In GitHub, change the Flowstate app’s repository access to All repositories, then select Run backfill.

A pull request has no cost. Its author isn’t matched to a person. Match them under Settings → Integrations → User attribution.

Engineering insights shows a holding screen. It isn’t switched on for your organisation. Ask your Flowstate admin.
