The impossibility of measuring AI productivity

I wanted a way to tell whether AI was making work better. I ended up arguing with ticket counts, cost accounting and my own assumptions. This is the method I would test, and the long list of reasons to be careful with it.

I modeled four options, an office rack, colocation, rented GPUs and per-token APIs, to find where each one actually wins. The answer turns on utilization, and it isn't the one the internet keeps giving.
